One our stewards shared a thought in our Exec meeting this week that got us all thinking: If you're carrying a cup of something and someone bumps you, you will spill whatever is in the cup - coffee, water, whatever. In the same way, if we are 'bumped' in life (pressured, provoked, challenged), whatever we are carrying within will spill out. Put differently, Jesus said that the condition of our heart is often revealed by our words ("out of the overflow of the heart, the mouth speaks" Luke 6:45).

What are you carrying in this busy time? What will spill out if you or I are bumped? This season is intended to be a time of joyful celebration and an experience of the presence of the Prince of Peace. Often however it becomes a time when we are stressed, even overwhelmed, and sometimes sad. Maybe the invitation for us this Christmas is to ensure that also we make space to be Mary at the feet of Jesus, and not just Martha concerned with many things (Luke 10:38-42). May your cup and mine be filled with the peace and joy intended for this season so that it overflows if we are bumped!

On another subject, a piece of good news to share with you: we are so excited to welcome Ashley Sellwood onto our staff team on a part time basis (she will be in the office on Wednesdays and Fridays). You know Ash as a society steward with a passion for outreach and mission, but she also has a wealth of administrative and financial experience and will be taking on some of this work in our church office. Welcome to the team, Ash!
