Archbishop William Temple famously said that "The Church is the only society on earth that exists for the benefit of those who are not its members". I'm sure that other organisations have a similarly selfless purpose, but the quote is a helpful wake-up call when we find ourselves thinking that the church exists simply for us. In fact, the call of Jesus to deny our selves daily and follow him points very clearly to a life of thinking of others and not just ourselves. Just before Easter we had the first meeting of our WMC Mission team which has been called together to co-ordinate our outreach work. There are a number of projects that we either organise as WMC or which we support financially (through a tithe of the church's income or through hosting them on our property). There is amazing work taking place through these various projects, but we recognised in our meeting that we can do more to keep you informed about this work. We plan to make use of our website, a display area in the church foyer, and the slides before services to keep you better in the loop - watch this space!

Of the projects we support, some focus on empowerment (passing on skills such as sewing, IT and literacy) while others are relief focused (giving food or clothing to the most vulnerable - especially the very young and the very old). For years we have a hosted a Soup Kitchen at WMC on behalf of the Westville Churches. Over the last year, the Soup Kitchen has been relaunched as Vulindlela and the emphasis of the project has shifted from relief (feeding) to empowerment (job creation and skills development). Numbers of you have supported the Soup Kitchen/Vulindlela financially over the years, for which we are very grateful. If you wish to continue to support Vulindlela, please mark your donations as such. If you would prefer to support a feeding project, you can mark donations for "WMC feeding project".

Last, you may have a passion for outreach work. If you would like to be involved in our Mission team, join the "Mission Projects" WhatsApp group in our WhatsApp Commmunity, or contact the church office.
