One of the cleverest pieces of graffiti I have ever seen had the following
spray-painted onto a wall in a public place: "Things I hate: 1. Vandalism
2. Irony 3. Lists" So good! At this time of year you might find yourself
announcing that you too are not a fan of lists, and especially lists of New
Year's Resolutions. You may even feel strongly enough to spray-paint it
onto your front wall...

I get it. After too many years of failing to follow through on our New
Year's plans, we have given up trying. It may be that the start of the new
year doesn't suit you when it comes to dreaming and planning your own
future, but it really would be a pity if we became so cynical that we never
aspired to change or grow. We may have failed previously, but the Christian
life calls for a kind of stubbornness that has us starting again each new
day - what Eugene Peterson called "a long obedience in the same direction".

The new year awaits as a blank page to be filled. What will your story be
in 2024?
